Re-jigging the classroom.

July7

I’ve been in at school today doing some tweaking in my classroom. I’ve changed my two side groups around and sorted out the cables a bit better. I start next term with 30 students. Four of these go to another class from 9:30-12:30 each day but that still leaves me with 26 students and traffic concerns. I think this is the best way to work. (I hope this is the best way to work!)

Here are some shots of the finished look.

Firstly a widescreen version:

The main pod of computers and radial groups – not much has changed here:

The revamped side groups:

Side groups from a different angle:

Close up of the ethernet cables for the side groups:

And another close up angle:

Here’s the inevitable tangle of cables under the central pod:

I purchased a rubberised cable protector yesterday – here it is in action.

And finally a short video tour of the classroom.

Now that’s an idea- having the book boxes in groups. My tables are so tiny anyway that there would sparse space for boxes of books. I might give it a try. Your set-up is great- makes my lousy three laptops look lame. Kids fight over using my TELA laptop as it generally can be relied on to go! Other laptops are getting worn out.

Looking great! Where did you get your cable protector from? I’ve taken your inspriation and changed my computers aroud for Term 3. The children are very excited about it. I’ve posted photos on my blog of the new layout.

I’m lucky enough to have access to a fairly new set of xtendas and two xp machines I bought in from home as well as an apple laptop we won a few years ago. I’d love to pry my tela laptop away from the mimio so might have to find another desktop to replace that :) .

I got the cable protector from Bunnings – having looked all over the place – it was the only place where the person I asked knew exactly what I was wanting!

I have a secret passion – well – maybe not so secret – teaching is not about feeding information into kids brains – it’s about creating a place where kids are inspired, enthused, excited about discovery and learning – so my goal as a teacher is to leave my kids wanting more and having the skills to find out more.

This year I’ve moved up a year level and am enjoying the more sophisticated conversations and explorations that we are having in the classroom. It’s exciting to see kids motivated because our classroom is using 21st Century tools for their everyday teaching and learning.

This blog is really for my reflective practise – about things that have worked (or not worked) in my classroom and to share these with others in my PLN.

I should also mention that I’m a Kiwi living in the North Island of New Zealand (just north of Wellington).
