EDM310 Students

June30

Over the course of this year this blog has been visited by students from Dr John Strange’s EDM 310 class. When the first student commented here I was amazed that my blog was chosen. I don’t see my blog as being anything unusual – it’s really a way of reflecting on my own teaching practice.

To the students from EDM310 who visit – welcome.

Thanks for taking some time to read and comment on my blog. Please feel free to ask me questions about anything you don’t understand – even if it’s why I’ve done something in a particular way. I don’t have all the answers but what I do have is a wide group of people who are my PLN – I communicate with them through blogging, twitter, email, skype etc. Collectively we work together to be the best, most passionate teachers we can be.

I hope your Summer course is one that will be life-changing for you. I look forward to your comments/questions/blog posts.

Perhaps I should explain the ‘dragonsinger’. Many years ago, before the internet was around, I was an active participant on BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) and needed to find a nickname. I had been reading the Anne McCaffrey series ‘Dragonriders of Pern‘. Menolly is the main character on the ‘Dragonsinger: Harper of Pern‘ book. She is a woman, singer, musician and teacher. Because I fit all those characteristics I realised that I’d found my online nickname.

    Hi dragonsinger!
As an EDM 310 student of Dr. Strange, I would like to personally like to thank you for acknowledging us. I have looked through your blog, and I like your posts. This class has most definitely changed my view of school from the perspective of a student, as well as my perspective as a future educator. I was wondering how you select the people and websites that go into your PLN. I have been having a little trouble weeding through the millions of resources that may be helpful to me in the future. I was wondering how you narrow your selctions down. Thank you for posting this!

Thanks for helping my students learn to reflect. It is one of the most important outcomes I hope to achieve in EDM310. I also want them to build up a powerful PLN. You help there as well. And I want them to get outside Alabama. That is essential for a true education. Again, you assist. And I want them to blog and use blogs in their classrooms. You serve as a model for that objective.

    Thank you.

I have a secret passion – well – maybe not so secret – teaching is not about feeding information into kids brains – it’s about creating a place where kids are inspired, enthused, excited about discovery and learning – so my goal as a teacher is to leave my kids wanting more and having the skills to find out more.

This year I’ve moved up a year level and am enjoying the more sophisticated conversations and explorations that we are having in the classroom. It’s exciting to see kids motivated because our classroom is using 21st Century tools for their everyday teaching and learning.

This blog is really for my reflective practise – about things that have worked (or not worked) in my classroom and to share these with others in my PLN.

I should also mention that I’m a Kiwi living in the North Island of New Zealand (just north of Wellington).
