As we’ve been sorting out our junk and packing things to keep for an upcoming house move, I’ve come across all sorts of photos. This has had me checking out the Old Friends website – to which I’m a member – and attempting (and failing) to upload some of the school photos. (The site won’t accept any scanned photos from a mac!)

However that got me thinking about mum and her career as a teacher. Imagine how nice it was to discover today that she was well remembered – and in a good way.

I imagine she was a lot more patient than I am even though many of her classes were large. I also found this class photo from 1965 – (I’m the cute one!) – 38 students (~7 years old) – what a handful!

As we wind our way towards the start of a new year I’m constantly reminded of mum and the lessons she taught me. I want to be the kind of teacher she was – respected by both students and families alike.

This blog really made me do some reflecting on my own life. My parents are both teachers, and what kind of student would I be if I didn’t give them the acknowledgement they deserve. My mom and I tend to mirror each other when it comes to favorite subjects to study. We both enjoy English and writing. She has taught me many different ways to write creatively as well as enjoy reading. I agree with you, I hope I can be as great as a teacher my mother (and also yours!) was and has been.

    Hello Dragonsinger,

I am in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. I enjoyed reading your blog post about your mom. The picture is fantastic! I can’t believe she had that many seven year olds in her class and looked so calm. I do not come from a family of teachers, in fact quite the opposite. I am the only “professional” teacher in my family. I do, however, come from a long line of both women and men who taught me so much about life and our world. Respect has always been at the top of that list. To be respected in my home, community, and workplace is very important to me. I understand why you value that so much.

I will be including a summary of my post from visiting your blog on my blog, Heather Weaver’s EDM 310 Class Blog, on 03/09/12. I have enjoyed reading your blog and learning more about your mission as a teacher. Best wishes to you!
